ProjectM - Music visualization for Linux

Posted on 6th August, 2011 | Tagged:

OK... I have just discovered something in the debian archives that does music visualization the way I remember when I used to use windows... or when watching a modern day XBOX

ProjectM

ProjectM can be used as a plugin for the JACK audio server, so, install qjackctl (this will install the magnificent JACK audio server and a QT frontend)

apt-get install qjackctl

install projectm-jack (the projectm plugin for jack)

apt-get install projectm-jack

good, now install audacious (actually you can use anything, inclusing XMMS or Amarok, but audacious is my current favourite, its good.)

apt-get install audacios

good. now run audacious and select jack as the output from the preferences menu, now run qjackctl load audacious and then play a song and then load projectM-jack and. There it is.

Or you can use QMMP

I had never heard of this media player before my search today, but it looks like a pretty decent winamp clone, and there is a native plugin for ProjectM in the debian wheezy branch.

apt-get install qmmp
apt-get install qmmp-plugin-projectm

JACK is a better option generally but it requires that you load at least 3 applications (JACKD, a media player and ProjectM) but it means that you can pipe any (anything that supports jack) to ProjectM.
